Summer’s Coming: Declutter Winter Coats

I’ve reached that time of the year where I’m happy to relinquish myself from the snugness of winter. Time to declutter our clothing – coats, outerwear and shoes to be specific.

I’ve enjoyed sunshine and warm temperatures for the last few weeks, and as my porch and entryway was becoming a bit overwhelmed with coats, jackets and boots, it was the right time to declutter and get organised.

So, it was back to my usual, simple method of decluttering and reorganising things to make my life easier.

Empty
  • Take everytOrderly Office and Home - Declutter Coats (rubbish).hing out. I did this by family member to avoid it turning into a huge task.
  • Give the shoe racks and coat hooks a good vacuum and wipe down. I didn’t want any bugs hiding away ready to eat their way through our stuff!!
  • Empty pockets. You’d think I had shares in Kleenex with the number of tissues I found in pockets! I’m turning into my mother…
Purge
  • Decision time. I removed any items that I no longer wanted to keep using my mantra of “Do you Need it, Use it, or Love it?” – anything too big/too small, past their best, etc. These were put into bags ready for a charity collection booked for the end of the week.
Sort & Organise
  • I separated out what was left. Things I’ll wear once the temperature drops again and things to wear in Summer and Autumn. Any items in need of repair or alteration were put aside to go to the tailor. I made a note in my digital diary to remind me before I forget!
Store
  • Winter items were bagged up and stored away in the loft. They’re labelled (well, in an autumnal themed bag similar to this one) so I can grab them easily when needed. The remainder were popped back onto hooks and shoe racks.
  • You may find it easier to store things under the bed or in a spare room – wherever you have space and safe access. Use a suitable container like these zip-up bags or these ones which squish down nicely, or even a spare suitcase. Avoid using these large laundry bags – they become too heavy to lift and handles can snap if crammed full!

The end result after I’d decluttered everyone’s winter coats and shoes was a huge improvement!
